Using a 3D Printer to Help Projects Come to Life!

Help me give my students a way to make their Computer Aided Design (CAD) projects literally take shape!

My Project

Students in the Innovation Lab work with the interdisciplinary subjects of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math). Fifth graders are currently working hard using a Computer Aided Design (CAD) program, TinkerCAD, to work on scale, spatial awareness, problem solving and 3D design to ultimately create authentic and customized work.

A powerful way for students to see their artistic work and design process truly come to life, is having a new 3D printer and a few different color options of filament for their CAD projects to be printed.

With the addition of a second printer and filament, work from multiple students can be printed at a time and improved or iterated designs can be given more opportunities to take shape. As students go through the engineers design process for their 3D printing unit, they get to see their 2D drawings morph into 3D paper prototypes and eventually, 3D printed art.

As these creative and determined students round out their final year of elementary school, having a customized design that they created is a beautiful lasting memento for them to keep.
