This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have a class of students of great need, socio-economically. We are an urban neighborhood public school filled with over 600 students of all lower-income backgrounds, high academic needs in terms of resources and funding, but culturally rich Latino backgrounds and highly motivated to succeed. 94.5% of our students receive free or reduced-price meals and our families need support in providing supplies necessary for my students to learn to the best of their ability.

Despite some family financial setbacks, my students have the drive to learn and love to come to school every day.

They are attentive, engaged, and love to interact with one another, sharing ideas and knowledge. It is truly my joy to see them come alive when they learn and share new things in our classroom.

My Project

My students will learn about Civics and U.S. History by interacting with me in notebooks using writing tools such as pens and pencils. They will learn and work in school and at home. By the end of our school year, they will know how the origins of America shaped the identity of America and be able to answer the question, "What does it mean to be an American?" We will read texts, takes notes about the texts using the materials I am asking for. We will watch videos and use PowerPoints and Google Slides to learn about eras such as the Civil War and Reconstruction. They will also learn how to be active in their community through Civics. I am also asking for border and posters to help reinforce our lessons and to create a visual aide as they connect U.S. history with the U.S. today.

Returning to the classroom after a historic pandemic means giving my students the materials and resources they need.

My 7th and 8th-grade students are returning from a community that was ravaged by the pandemic. Many are suffering from trauma and great sadness. Their families have been affected first hand either by the death of loved ones or unemployment. They do not have the limited resources they had prior to the pandemic. They need our help to be prepared to return to learning.

We need these classroom basics to help them learn.
