My Students
When asked, most adults remember history class as a boring series of memorizing dates and facts.
I strive to make history exciting and relevant every day! Our class is full of video clips, discussion, projects, and a variety of documents.
My students surprise me with their unique questions and excitement about United States History.
They come willing to learn every day, but do not come equipped with all of the tools. With over 75 percent of my students on free and reduced lunch, and their parents often working 2 or more jobs, some of my kids come in reading at as low as a third grade level.
My Project
I am requesting 2 class sets of Ronald Tekaki "A Different Mirror For Young People" for my students. This book will be an exceptional way to reflect the multicultural population in my classroom. It contains easy to access mini-essays and other materials that I will incorporate in the classroom as a way to ensure my students can see themselves in the history of the United States. These articles are perfect for having open ended discussions on issues of race and identity in the U.S. and how it has changed over time, which is rarely adequately reflected in a standard U.S. history textbook.
So often, a typical textbook has limited or vague interpretations of history teaching to the most common or easiest point of view in history.
It is important for my students to be able to identify with their nation and its history which is challenging given the perspectives often shown in a textbook.
