My students need to understand and feel as many different types of rocks on our earth. These igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary and geodes will advance their learning.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Wow my students are eager to learn. They have even started a rock collection with rocks from their city neighborhood. A box full of concrete, asphalt and pebbles. I would love for them to feel what the different types of rocks they read about really feel like.
My second grade public school students are girls and boys from the nearby NYC housing projects.
They come from different cultures. All my students love first hand experiences because they lack these experiences and money at home. The school has made it a point to let students enjoy first hand learning as much as possible but funds are dwindling each year.
My Project
The rock kit will be shared with our second grade companion class as well. These sedimentary, metamorphic, igneous, mineral and fossil rock collections will be used each year. Students will really learn to observe the properties of these real rocks. They will really understand the differences within each type and add so much more to what they have learned through books. We are also hoping to let the students take a piece of the experience home with the crack the geodes experiment.
These rock kits will help imprint all they have learned about rocks in their brain.
The student will be able to access the rock collections all year long. They will work in partnerships to become experts in each type of rock. They will truly understand what it means to be a GEOLOGIST and a life long learner!
