This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 4th grade at a low-income school in South Los Angeles. I worked hard last year trying to give my class the type of quality education that I received and that they all deserve. One thing that was frustrating to me was mainly using the state-given textbooks for Reading. Many of the stories in the textbook are enjoyable; however, I really wanted to expose them to different types of literature, especially novels for their grade-level. So I began reading to them aloud after lunch everyday. We read some of my favorite chapter books from elementary schools and the kids loved it! They would sit down quickly and quietly after lunch ready to hear the next chapter. Often times, they would beg me to keep reading! After that I really pushed them to borrow books from my own classroom library and to check books out at the school and their local libraries. This year I hope to have a class set of novels for all of my students. Just from meeting them on the first week of school, I can already see the potential and excitement for a wonderful year! By having a class set of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" by Roald Dahl, each student in the class will be able to have their own book to take home and read for homework, read together with the class, and have many enrichment activities to go along with the story. I believe that if students are exposed to different types of literature and able to read things that they enjoy their love for reading will grow. Literacy is extremely important in their academic success because they will be able to better read material for all subjects in their academic careers.
