This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Couldn't we all use more mindfulness in our lives? Wouldn't we each benefit from the opportunity to unplug and unwind? These at-risk, urban teens deserve a chance to learn of the benefits of yoga.
You would fall in love with these kids.
Hard working, resilient, and down to earth, 80 percent of our students live at or below the US poverty level. They are the sons and daughters of immigrants, of parents who adore their children but are held down by economic hardships. These students will be the first in their families to attend college. They work to help families pay for rent and food. They look after younger siblings.
They live stressful lives and truly would benefit from yoga.
My Project
Yoga will provide my students with tools they may use all their lives. We will focus on breathing and minimizing distractions. These supplies will empower them to appreciate their bodies and not use the drugs and alcohol so prevalent in our community.
These supplies will allow students to learn relaxation techniques.
High school students will take their eyes off screens and engage in physical activity. Through movement and also stillness, they will connect with their thinking and develop awareness. These supplies will introduce these urban students skills to use all their lives.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
