Urban Teen Books for Urban Teens Who Love Books!

My students need 31 book titles including "Fast Life" and "Broken China" they can relate to like Street Love and Make Lemonade.

My Students

Everyone wants to be able to relate to the characters in the books they read. My students are no different. They like to read realistic fiction about people just like them dealing with the same issues they deal with.

My students are wonderful people!

My students attend a small, urban, highly successful charter school. They are mostly in grades 5-8. My classes are single sex and I work mostly with struggling readers who are working so hard to get up to grade level in reading. Most of my students receive free or reduced lunch. Most of them do not have access to books outside the classroom.

My Project

My students have really become interested in reading this year, but we've got to keep that passion burning. Many of my students (especially my girls' classes) love reading urban teen fiction because they can relate so well to the characters and situations that are presented in the books. They love to read, recommend, and discuss these books with others. Most of these books will be used for students to read independently during independent reading time or at home. I requested multiple copies of a couple books to read in small groups, also. My students will learn that they are not alone with the issues they face because the characters they read about are working through the same problems. They will also learn that reading is fun when you find the right book!

My school does not have a school library, so all of the books my students read and take home come from our classroom library.

In order to keep them hooked on reading, I need to provide them with new books that they are excited to read. These books will hook them because they love relating to characters and situations that are similar to them. Thank you so much for your support!
