Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 7th and 8th grade students in a high needs inner-city setting. Our school is extremely diverse, with nearly 50 percent living below the poverty line and 70 percent receiving free or reduced price lunch services. In my class, I have students that are either living below the poverty line or teeter slightly above it. My students are incredibly curious, innovative, and creative. They learn best when they are exposed to hands-on experiential learning, and when they can apply the knowledge they've learned in class to a real-life situation.

My Project

Living in a city means that students see very little green space used outside of park to run and play in. Living in a city plagued with poverty means that food deserts run rampant and students rarely get the chance to get their hands on fresh produce and understand where their food comes from. In order to combat this, my school was provided a Learning Garden, providing students with a place to get their hands dirty and get a chance to grow their own vegetables.

This project will help kids dig into their education, thrive with real, nutritious foods and healthy habits, and become active participants in strengthening our community.

I hope to improve the students learning environment by creating experiential learning and garden-based education opportunities in a cross-curricular way. Students will receive hands on science lessons, talk about budgeting for math, have a wonderful outside space for students to read in, and most importantly, give them the chance to try fresh foods that they have grown themselves.

The items I am requesting include seeds for both fresh herbs and vegetables that will be planted inside of seedling trays in the winter to be transplanted into our garden in the Springtime. I also requested items to help us with the harvest, including harvest buckets, salad spinners to clean the vegetables, scissors for clippings, and scales to weigh our harvest.

Please help bring fresh foods into my students hands!
