My Students
Hello everyone, I am a New York City high school biology teacher. My classes are generally composed of freshman and sophomore students, many of whom, seem to have lost (or hidden) that childhood curiosity for the world around them that was, at one time, so insatiable.
Yet, this year I am coaching a group of urban NYC students who are excited and eager to learn all they can about the environment in which we live and that is common in the rest of the state.
Many of these students want to pursue careers in environmental fields when they go to college, but for now want to learn all they can to prepare.
What they want to prepare for is college three years down the road, and the Envirothon Competition we wish to participate in next year. But as these students are starting the team from scratch, we have no materials with which they can prepare!
My Project
And so that is where you come into play! I am asking for your help to buy the reading materials they will need to compete against students from all 55 counties in NY state in the fields of Forestry, Aquatics, Soils and Wildlife. My very urban students who barely see trees will be competing against upstate students who have 4H programs at their schools as well as farm animals on campus!! We need books, bird song DVDs, soil samples and leaf ID kits. We need to bring the environment to our classroom because there is precious little of it outside!
Activities and programs like these teach the students how to work together to solve problems and approach adversity. These are skills they will need as they prepare for and attend college, as well as for all that follows.
Help me to prepare these eager and excited students to compete against their more rural peers in a competition on unfamiliar territory.
But more importantly help me to help these environmentally conscience students to achieve their goals of acting as future stewards of this world!
