Urban Gardening Project

My students need a fully operational hydroponics garden to grow vegetables and herbs. We are an environmental science magnet school, and the students have a love for gardening and helping their fellow students.

My Students

I teach at a magnet school focusing on the sciences as well as the arts. The students here are very interested in science and love to ask questions and design experiments to gather deeper understanding. Many of my students come from underprivileged homes because our school is a Title I school. They are very interested in gardening and keeping the school environmentally friendly. On top of having some green space at school to use, they are interested in making use of ALL of our urban space to lessen our carbon footprint.

My Project

The students will use the hydroponics kit to grow a garden of herbs and vegetables. They will use the produce from the garden to help students in need. We are a Title I environmental science magnet, and we have an emphasis on gardening. Being in an urban environment does not make this an easy venture. This kit with seeds will help bring fresh and all-natural produce to our students. We plan on donating any of our extra produce to students at our school who are in need. With the majority of our harvest, we will make salads and flavor our meals in the cafeteria. We will have monthly tastings of vegetables and allow our students to be the leaders of the garden.
