To increase student learning and knowledge about the environment.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am starting my third year of teaching at the High School for Environmental Studies, ,a public school in New York City. I started there teaching science to a group of students with special needs. I have had the wonderful opportunity to continue to work with a lot of these same students. Last year I taught them in a Science RCT Prep Class. The class was designed to help them pass the Science RCT (an exam they need to graduate with something more than an IEP diploma). After much hard work, 27 of the students passed the exam and are moving on to another year of science. For our third year, I wanted to give the students something interesting and exciting. I am developing an Urban Ecology class that will focus on the Hudson River and the plant and animal interactions in New York City. Through this class, I hope that my students will feel a greater connection to the city they live in and the natural environment that surrounds them. I want them to learn that their actions, positive and negative, can influence the health of the ecosystem that we all live in. Right now, the school has very little resources that can be used in this class, in particular, dissecting or stereo microscopes. Dissecting scopes give students a very different perspective of organisms. You can look at live specimens and get a close look at the anatomy of many different organisms. In the water we can find copepods, amphipods, plankton, and bacteria. When looking at plants, we can look at the spores on ferns, seeds, and parts of the flower. Insects are fascinating to look at under dissecting microscopes with their compound eyes, delicate wings and diverse antenna and mouthparts. Dissecting scopes make the microscopic world tangible to students in the classroom. They will get to experience and make connections to organisms that they never knew existed and see things in a different light. They will learn to appreciate the adaptations that organisms have and the variation that exists among living things.
