This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I currently teach 2nd grade to 21 wonderful students. We are in an urban school, but this year, we have had the wonderful opportunity of visiting a working farm each week. My students have loved learning about farming, agriculture, habitats, and animal husbandry. They have even started thinking about careers tied to this experience (farmer, veterinarian, food scientist, chef, and even maple syrup producer).

One aspect of the farm that they all love is the chickens and of course, their fluffy chicks.

Once they learned that the chicks on the farm are hatched using incubators, they have been begging to get one for our classroom. They want to see how an embryo grows within the egg, watch them hatch, and then take care of the chicks. For this project, we will need an incubator, a heating pad for the chicks (safer than a heat lamp), a feeder and waterer, and finally little roosting bars. I will be providing the eggs, feed, and brood box for this project.
