Urban Biodiversity Research Project Materials for AP Environmental
Help me give my students the materials needed to complete their urban biodiversity research project. Students will create a college-level, scientific poster that they will use to communicate their results to students, teachers, and community members.

My Project
This year, my AP environmental students are involved in a year-long, urban biodiversity research project in collaboration with the Lincoln Park Zoo and seven other CPS schools. Students have been studying bird, mammal, and bat biodiversity in the neighborhood surrounding the school.
At the end of the year, students will complete a research project comparing biodiversity to a variable of their choice (greenspace, poverty rates, proximity to major roads, etc.).
Students will be required to create a college-level, research poster communicating their testable question, background knowledge, hypothesis, procedure, data tables and graphs, conclusions, and conservation implications. In order to do this, students will need tri-fold poster boards. The bird feeder will help to attract more birds to the area, as we have seen a decrease in bird biodiversity this year due to nearby construction.
My AP students are a hard-working group of individuals, many of which come from low-income households. In past years, students have walked away from AP environmental science with a newfound appreciation for nature conservation. Some have even been inspired to major or minor in environmental studies in college. This research project sparked an interest for many students in the past, so I am hopeful that we will be able to secure the materials needed for high-quality projects once again this year.
