My Project
As a middle school teacher in the South Bronx, a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges. My students are are comprised of Special Education, ESL, and low performing inner city kids.
We've worked so hard this school year building our reading skills and our social emotional being!
Getting actual books with the theme of empathy and compassion in my kids hands would be a life saver! Wonder by R.J. Palacio is a great read for my class because it explores empathy, kindness, and acceptance - all great qualities I have tried to build throughout the year. I want my students to leave this year, not just caring about themselves but also those around them.
Regardless of the challenges they face now or in the future, every student in my class has the chance to succeed. This book, Wonder, shows despite exploring difficult issues, with hope and resilience, you can overcome challenges and embrace your own unique qualities. This book encourages just that!
