This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My library is in a public inner city school. The students come from low income homes and 100% receive a free lunch. Students in my school come from culturally diverse backgrounds and depend on the school library to offer them books that are diverse, current and up to date. My students enjoy the books I can provide them on a weekly basis because the public library is far away and because many don't have money to buy books. Many of my students are very appreciative when I can put new books in the library and are excited to check them out for the first time. I often hear "Thank you," or get a hug.
My Project
The nonfiction books in our library need to be updated. Over half the nonfiction books in the library are 25 years old or more. Information on technology, the environment, the world, and more is constantly changing. Students need books with current up to date information in them. Unfortunately, our school budget cannot keep up. Students could use technology for this information but we don't have the budget for databases either.
Teachers like students to do reports on animals, careers, biographies, states, and countries.
Teachers also like students to do science projects. In order for the library to support the classroom curriculum and the students, the nonfiction section needs to be updated. Updating the nonfiction section of the library is essential to ensuring the success of our students in these vital learning projects.
