My students need to learn the love of reading. Right now our library is dated and there are not enough books to which they can relate or are interested in. Most books are older and worn.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is in San Lorenzo, which is located in the heart of the Bay area. It contains a very diverse student population with students ranging in ethnicity and race, as well as academic skill level. Being a bay area native myself, I know that the experience here is very special and enriching, having exposure to several different cultures and experiences.
Due to the low socioeconomic status of a majority of our families, our students have not been given the same backgrounds and opportunities as others in more affluent areas of the bay area.
Several of our students do not have the funds, resources, or time to get exposure to good, let alone any, reading and educational materials.
Despite their setbacks, our students have great spirit and enthusiasm as a community. They are willing and able to gain the most from their educational experience. We work together with what we are given and thrive. Our students are strong, creative, innovative, and grow from their experiences.
My Project
My students tell me they don't like reading. I need current books to change their mind! The books I have in my classroom are dated, falling apart, and not really relevant to my students' interests. With new and current books, students might be more apt to reading, and develop the skills and confidence to read independently and on a regular basis.
I need to get my students to develop a love of reading that is so important in a world of smart phones, technology, and video games.
It is important they boost their reading skills to enhance their communication and verbal skills.
