This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Several years ago, my school benefited from a grant that outfitted each classroom with a laptop cart. It was wonderful! But now - grant over - we’re left with a batch of soon-to-be outdated laptops. We need new laptops to revitalize our cart so my students can continue to have access to technology.
My students are 10th graders who want a chance to succeed!
Many are striving to be the first in their families to attend college and many are English Language Learners whose families have come to the community from Spanish-speaking countries. Our school, which opened in 2004, is an urban public school that offers grades 6-12 in a low-income area of New York City. Our school's mission is to provide the community with the best public school education possible.
We want all students to graduate college or career ready, and this cannot be possible without the proper access to technology. Many of my students come from homes where they do not have reliable access to the Internet or the technological tools that would greatly help them achieve this goal.
My Project
Here's what having access to laptops in the classroom has enabled my students to do over the years: Assess and track their own reading levels, build websites and short informational videos for their peers about college and career paths, read e-books, and even edit and produce short films!
Additionally, our school uses Gmail and Google Drive for a number of academic functions - turning in work, posting class resources, and collaborating with peers. Unfortunately, many students aren't able to use all of these resources or the newer tools they provide because of our out-of-date laptops. A new set of Chromebooks would work perfectly with these platforms and structures that we already have in place!
As the teacher, there are other projects I would also like to introduce this year, such as having students record podcasts or create their own skill-teaching videos for each other. These projects can become a reality with new Chromebooks!
Last year, I attended a professional development session about how to use technology to increase engagement and literacy in the classroom.
The presenter boldly asserted that someone could no longer be considered literate without knowing how to use a cell phone. I thought about this statement and agreed. The power of the world of technology and what you can do with it is great, but only if you know how to access it. Help make this possible for all 10th graders at my school!
