Upcycling Water Bottles...The Dale Chihuly Way

My students need tools to "upcycle" plastic water bottles by coloring them with permanent marker, heating them to melt and like glass, and create mobiles.

My Students

Don't throw that away! I can use it for something. Students hear me saying this all of the time. This project will help students to see that reusing "junk" or found objects, objects that would be otherwise discarded, can be upcycled into an artistic masterpiece of their very own.

Our elementary students, grades 1-5, are highly enthusiastic about learning.

They are artistic and enjoy hands-on experiences beyond paper, pencil, and crayon. Unfortunately, school budgets get cut constantly, and art programs seem to suffer as a result. In order to supplement the basics with high-interest, unique art experiences that incorporate the core content areas, DonorsChoose has been a wonderful way for our students to experience those unique art experiences that help to enhance the curriculum and help students make meaningful connections to the classroom subjects. They are very proud to see their work displayed throughout the hallways and in our showcases.

My Project

Students will not only learn about art glass and historical facts about glass blowing and glass making, they will also learn the value of "upcycling" and making something beautiful by reusing it rather than throwing it away. Water bottles are disposed of at a tremendous rate and the quantity of them we see being sent out to recycling is tremendous. Students are able to learn about the "reuse" part of reduce, reuse, and recycle. Science connections will not only be tied in with the balance component of their science curriculum by making mobiles, but they will be studying the work of Calder and Chihuly.

Not only will this project provide hands-on connections to the content areas, but it will also be long lasting.

The embossing heat tools will be used for other projects as well throughout this school year and many years to come. A project like this is difficult to do since the typical school budget does not support the necessary supplies. Donors Choose is a great way for students to experience the "extra" special experiences they typically won't be able to otherwise. Thank you!
