Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
One of my favorite quotes is: If you want grown-ups to recycle, just tell their kids the importance of recycling, and they'll be all over it by Bill Nye. This quote highlights the importance of starting with our children to recycle and reuse. My project shows my students the benefits of reusing.
My students are fifth grade students that attend a public school in Camden, New Jersey.
The school is located in a poverty stricken area with a high crime rate. Despite this well known fact, my students are bright, creative, and motivated to learn. The class consist of 6 boys and 10 girls. Fourteen out of sixteen students stated that recycling and reusing was important to them. Reducing came in second with two votes. I want to spark interest in environmental issues through engagement. They are intelligent, hardworking, creative, mature, and curious individuals. However, due to limited resources at home and school, they do not explore issues as much as they need to through hands-on activities.
My Project
The supplies requested will provide an opportunity for students to plan, design, and construct a soap dispenser using recycled water bottles. The mobile organizer will hold button, glue, paper, yarn, glitter, and other decorating resources. Each student will bring in an empty water bottle instead of throwing it away. Students will respond to questions about recycling in their notebook. After questions and answers, students will develop a plan in their notebook. After completing plans, they will try out several designs before starting to create project. They'll get to utilize many math and science concepts they have learned in class. After creating a few designs in their notebook, students will begin to use adhesive to attach objects to the water bottle. Once the recycled water bottle dries, they will pour liquid soap inside the bottle and insert a pump dispenser. Students will learn that recycling can be fun and helps the earth.
Thanks to partner funding and other generous donors my class will get resources that teach them the importance of recycling.
Their lives will change because they will be more mindful of things they throw away that can be reused. Additionally as they grew, they will be advocates for recycling. This project will allow all learners to be actively engaged in learning, producing, and sharing.
