My Students

My school is the beneficiary of wide ethnic, linguistic, and religious diversity, and my students are smart, curious, and capable. Like 8th graders everywhere, they learn best when curriculum is presented with a balance of reading, discussion, hands-on experimentation, and group-oriented projects.

I'm constantly being surprised by my kids' creativity, flexibility, and willingness to confront novel challenges.

For that reason, I'm always looking for ways to increase the range of challenges and opportunities that I can offer to my young problem-solvers!

My Project

My school's balloon-building project is centered on the ideas of density, buoyancy, mass, and volume. But this project teaches students much more, including working effectively in a team, making & executing a plan, understanding diagrams, and a lot more. Our students really look forward to this fun and engaging project, and so do I!

Density is a cognitively difficult concept, and buoyancy is even more mentally challenging.

A hot-air balloon gives students a hands-on experience of a low-mass, high-volume object, and helps them visualize the density difference between hot & cold air.

The pride that students experience while watching the balloon they built with their friends ascend into the California sky helps them see science and engineering as exciting and fun!
