My Students
How do you paint a picture of the world for a child whose world is only as big as their backyard? That is a challenge that I face every day as I work to inspire a group of students whose reality is often dark, grim, and filled with a lack of worldly experiences.
My students live in the inner city.
They attend a school the services families who do not have much. Many live in single parent homes. Most get their main meals from school. All of them want to connect to something more than the harsh reality of their day to day lives.
Their story is one of pain, struggle, and resilience. Scarred by the wounds of life, my students come to my classroom with obstacles that even some adults may find hard to overcome. Strengthened and encouraged through my love and support for them, my students work hard to achieve and deserve the best that can be offered to them.
They are not looking for pity, but for love and support. They are not downtrodden by life's rough courses but are motivated to be as I have taught them to be...the best.
My Project
21st Century Teachers bring learning to life in their classrooms by making meaningful connections to taught concepts. A subscription to Scholastic News for each of my students would help me to bring the world of learning to life for my students. Concepts that we discuss in class, will float off of the pages of the magazine and into their brains. Images will begin to form and students will start to make connections.
Once explored in class, students will have the exciting pleasure to take their magazine home and use it for future reading and sharing with friends and family. Since most of my students do not have ANY form of reading material in their home, such an initiative will be life changing and will not only plant a love for reading in them but also in the hearts of their parents.
Scholastic News will enrich my classroom experience, instill a joy of reading in my students' hearts, and make first grade that much more incredible for the cute little people in my room of learning.
Imagine your school and home life without connection to the world.
No magazines. No photographs. No real world articles. Imagine growing up and not knowing the power within each of those tools and being limited by your environment and tough economy. I do not want that kind of reality for my students and I cannot afford to end that nightmare for them. Help me help them by giving to my classroom today! Donations for this cause will empower a generation by making learning in first grade come alive!
