Up Close and Personal With Estuaries!

I need to attend the "Teachers on the Estuary" workshop by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to get first-hand experience that will improve my science instruction about ecosystems.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Cosans's classroom raised $239

This project is fully funded

My Students

Within my school, almost 90% of students live in poverty. While the school has initiatives that provide students with free breakfast, lunch, snacks, and weekend food bags, many students are unable to come to school with supplies and spend time in classrooms that are not fully equipped with necessary materials.

My fourth graders are resilient individuals who face many challenges when they leave school; although there are a variety of trials in the world, our classroom is a place of solace and success.

Fourth grade is a time where students have deep, clear feelings about school and the world around them - and they let those feelings be known!

I have 9 girls and 9 boys in my fourth grade classroom - an even split! This group has a vibrant mix of personalities and they have grown tremendously this year. My students love working at stations, completing hands-on projects, and proving how much they know. My students make teaching so rewarding!

My Project

Science instruction can be so engaging and impact, but can be very hard to teach and learn when students (and teachers) don't have experience with the topics being taught. In fourth grade, students are expected to understand ecosystem organization and the interrelation of species, habitats and niches, the influence of human activity on ecosystems, and many more important topics.

I'd love to attend the "Teachers on the Estuary" professional development workshop this summer to bring back photos, lesson plans, and a greater knowledge of estuaries!

This workshop will provide excellent opportunities to network and experience forested wetlands first-hand. I will be able to network with colleagues from many different locations to engage about science and literature. This workshop will feature children's author Kevin Kurtz and his book, "A Day in a Forested Wetland" and highlight National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Estuaries 101 Curriculum, which will allow me to leave with an in-depth understanding of how to best teach about this ecosystem! I will also get to explore the North Inlet estuary by kayak during this training to experience the estuary in person! I would love the chance to improve my science instruction through the authentic experiences this training will offer.
