Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Seeing is believing in the walls of my classroom. Models for representing mathematical concepts and unusual approaches are being constructed by students. Working collaboratively and exhaustively, I challenge my students to think beyond the numbers and find meaning within them.

The student body of the 8th grade is a well mannered group of young people bursting with personality.

Students from all over the world grace my room every day, carrying with them languages, cultures, and learning histories. With over 40 countries represented, our students bring in diverse, rich cultures that change they way they learn. Our school is a place where all students are praised for their differences, accepted, and encouraged to share their heritage with others.

My Project

The iPad and Apple TV will be utilized in the classroom to help support student success, pose questions, address misconceptions, and encourage discourse about different patterns in thought in mathematics. Groups working around the room are often isolated and discoveries must often be recreated later. With these tools, it will be possible to display interesting thought patterns instantly from around the room, allowing students to watch as their peers are developing ideas. Further, students will be able to use the technology to document their research and make videos to articulate their findings for other students to examine. Students that have mastered skills be able to provide resources to their peers to help them venture through problem solving, and students struggling with content may be able to pose questions to their peers.

These tools will allow me to celebrate the student successes, display common misconceptions, and provide a platform for student interaction on the problem solving process.

Students will also develop additional skills in presenting and documenting their ideas digitally. These 21st century skills will provide valuable tools and experience to aid students in future endeavors in school as well as the real world.
