Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education,” Martin Luther King, Jr.
I aim to help my students own the skills and confidence to realize their dreams.
I want them to dream big. The elementary school I work in has about 400 students, most of whom come from low-income families of various backgrounds.
I teach in Spanish bilingual classrooms where more than 90% of students are English Language Learners. Some of my students are also not proficient in Spanish. They often come with low reading and writing scores in Spanish and English. Many of the students are not yet independent thinkers and have difficulty articulating their thoughts both orally and in writing. Often they lack the confidence to problem solve and defend their thinking in both languages. Additionally, they are often intimidated by English. My goal is to show them all they can do in both languages.
My Project
There are many learning resources online and I use many of them. However students are spending 5 to 8 hours online in Zoom classes and doing homework and practicing online during their non-Zoom time. Many families are stressed and students rarely go out. So even families with only one child are feeling a need to keep their students busy and find ways to relax. What is more relaxing than a board game? Bingo games are so easy to play that families will not get frustrated with learning the instructions. Families will be engaged in fun ways to practice skills with their students. Students will not only get to improve their skills in multiplication and sight words, but may have a positive connection with their parents.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
