Our school uses one day of the week to focus on wellness. In the past, students participated in mindful minutes and wellness walks. Last year students mentioned how much they miss having recess-a dedicated time for physical activity and gameplay. Everyone agreed that we all needed a break from electronics since most of our school day was plugged in. We began experimenting with what recess would look like at the high school level. Students brought frisbees and kick balls, while others brought board games.
We realized quickly that allowing a short break to unplug from the curriculum, daily stress, and electronics created opportunities for us to connect in a new way.
The unstructured time not only helped us all blow off some steam but also build a community. Many students brought games multiple people could play because they enjoyed getting to know their classmates better.
Your donations will not only expand the games we have already collected but also help my students recharge and refocus for the rest of our day. The break from the pace of a busy school day is a welcome mental break--one that is needed for high school students.
