UnMasking Middle School ELA

My Project

Middle school can be a difficult time for many students. As social groups ebb and flow, many students often have difficulty finding who they are and they want to show to their friends at school. Finding their identity and being confident in their gifts and talents is often a struggle.

My students love opportunities to create products that show their understanding of literature and how it connects to their personal lives.

One of our units focuses specifically on becoming confident in your own skin. During this unit, students will read and analyze characters to discover ways of building their own confidence in themselves.

When provided an opportunity to create using art supplies, my students excel. Their thinking deepens and their creativity shines. They thrive with tasks and activities that take ELA out of the book and out of the box. As a culminating project, students will reflect in themselves and create masks that show the student they are willing to show and the one they may be hiding behind a mask.
