Help me give my students masks, paint and brushes so that they can create a one of a kind mask while we study theatre traditions from Ancient Greece, Ancient China, and Commedia Dell'Arte!
My students attend a suburban school right outside of Columbia, SC. We have a very diverse population. These students represent all different races, genders, and income populations. As a member of this community, I live among them, and am so proud to be a member of this community.
Theatre is being offered to my students for the first time in a while this upcoming school year.
Theatre is an inclusive fine arts that welcomes all students. I will be teaching a class of sixth grade, two classes of mixed seventh and eighth grade, and a modified class specifically for special needs students. Did I mention that our school hasn't had a theatre classroom in several years? Allowing students to have a freedom of expression with their bodies and voices will strengthen their independence and creative skills both in and out of the classroom.
My students are kind, creative, passionate, and dramatic. I am so excited to bring the immersive experience of theatre class to these students. Many of them are already "all in," and it's so exciting to watch!
My Project
Masks are an important part in the history of theatre, and while we are studying their usage in the eras of Ancient Greece, China, and Commedia Dell'Arte, I would like for my students to have the opportunity to create their own mask for use in a monologue that they prepare.
The paint, brushes, and masks will help my students realize that theatre is absolutely real and that they can partake in traditions that have been handed down for thousands of years!
All of my students will have the opportunity to create masks, I teach a sixth grade class, three combined classes of seventh and eighth graders, and a modified class for special needs students. This project will be used across all classes, and hopefully turn into something that these students are proud of!
