My Project
In our Horizon class, we have 8, amazing, autistic students, each with their own unique learning style and strengths. As we work to create a more inclusive and effective learning environment, we are focusing on building our classroom library to align with the principles of the Science of Reading, an evidence-based approach that emphasizes systematic, explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
Our goal for this project is to provide our students with a well-rounded, carefully curated collection of books that aligns with the Science of Reading, offering them opportunities to practice phonics, develop vocabulary, and strengthen comprehension in a structured, engaging way.
This will include books with predictable patterns, interactive elements, and visuals that can support both their learning and their sensory needs.
The Science of Reading framework has shown us the importance of building strong foundational reading skills, and we want to ensure that our classroom library supports this by providing resources that match the specific needs of our students. By building a library that incorporates these science-based strategies, we can create an environment where our students can develop their reading skills in a way that suits their learning styles and helps them gain confidence as readers.
What makes our students special is their creativity, perseverance, and their unique ways of connecting with the world. With the right resources and instruction, they can develop into confident, independent readers. By building a classroom library that aligns with the Science of Reading, we’re not just giving them books—we’re giving them the tools to unlock the power of literacy and open doors to new possibilities in their learning and personal growth.
