My Project
The incorporation of culturally responsive books in my classroom will promote self-confidence, empathy, acceptance, and tolerance, all of which are essential skills for young children to become kind and respectful citizens. These diverse books will be read aloud to the class during whole group instruction for several content areas, including socio-emotional learning (SEL), STEM, and social studies. For example, for National Hispanic Heritage Month, beginning in September, I will integrate some of these books into my lesson plan for social studies as the students will learn and celebrate the history and culture of this ethnic group. In addition, the students in my class will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in these diverse books during workstations and independent reading time.
Young children need to see a representation of themselves in the books they read because it will unlock a world of endless possibilities for them, where they will believe they can become engineers, accountants, lawyers, and any other occupations of their interest in the future, despite their gender and race or ethnicity.
As a student teacher, I witnessed the positive differences that culturally responsive texts have made in students' lives. Children tend to develop a sense of belonging and feel more welcomed in the classroom after reading and listening to these types of books as they become aware that their teacher appreciates their cultural background and loves the unique qualities that make them who they are as a person!
