This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have caught the reading bug and I couldn't be more excited! We spend 90 minutes a day reading independently and talking about what we are reading. Being able to listen to the story while following along in a book strengthens the fluency skills and comprehension for struggling readers.
I am a third year 5th grade teacher in a Title 1 school.
Over 80% of my students receive free and reduced lunch. There isn't reading material readily available at home and they often stand overwhelmed and excited by the multitude of choices in my classroom library. They are giddy when they reach for a book and crack open the spine for the first time. Eyes sparkle, grins spread, and the room buzzes with young readers coming to life. However, for some of them, many of those books are out of their literary reach due to dyslexia, learning disabilities, or a lack of a strong reading life. Research shows that listening to books while reading the text strengthens the skills needed to be an independent reader and can double reading scores! Being able to read on grade level texts increases confidence and self-esteem. Making these gains in reading and boosting their confidence before heading off to middle school, high school and beyond is essential for my young friends' future success.
My Project
Having iPods in the classroom makes my young friends' reading possibilities endless! We don't have to worry about scratched or missing CDs, replacing batteries, or limited storage space in the classroom. All levels of books are available at the touch of the screen. We will also be able to record ourselves reading to evaluate how our fluency improves throughout the year.
Donating 2 iPod touches to our classroom will help us reach our reading goals of becoming fluent and on grade level readers.
It will be a gift that provides life-long impact as my young friends discover the unparalleled joy of being able to read anything they pick up!
