Unleashing Creative Cardboard Genius

Help me give my students cardboard engineering challenges to deepen their creativity outside the traditional curriculum.

My Students

My 4th graders are a culturally diverse community of learners in the SoMa district of San Francisco, united by our strong classroom culture. Half of my class are English Language Learners; at home, they speak Spanish, Tagalog, Arabic, Russian, and Mandarin. At school, they teach each other short phrases in their home languages. They love playing and working together--helping each other with origami, organizing into group tag games, and creating solar panel electrical systems with their science partners.

These activities give students the chance to collaborate, communicate, and problem-solve--skills that were impacted during distance learning.

And just as importantly, they allow students to play. This play-acts as a balm for children who are caring for younger siblings, living through the trauma of the pandemic, and experiencing housing and food insecurity.

My Project

My students are artistic and creative--they love drawing Dogman and anime and constructing marble roller coasters, spaghetti towers, and paper structures. But our school doesn't have art, STEAM, computer, science teachers. Students have also been limited in their access to engineering opportunities while learning from home for a year and a half. They deserve more.

These supplies will help students develop their physics, problem-solving, and artistic skills while collaborating on a cardboard engineering challenge.

We already have a robust collection of cardboard boxes--the books Not a Box and Cardboard Box Engineering will provide examples of how this material can be reused in infinite ways. Students will begin with small experiments and lessons on cardboard joining techniques, followed by partner and group challenges like "build an animal home" and "build something with a pulley." Finally, kids will use sharpies, acrylic paint, and stickers to decorate their creations!
