O, my! We have just discovered that the red bags that we use to take books home each week have LEAD in them!!! Can you believe this? We are in dire need of new, safer book bags.
These red book bags are the mainstay of our Kindergarten homework program and allow many of our families, who would not otherwise have quality books to read to their little ones, access to excellent children’s literature on a regular basis.
Many of our children come from low income, struggling families and these families really appreciate the ready access to these wonderful books. Most of them do take the time to read at least these books to their child each week, something hat would not happen if the books weren’t right there.
There is a lovely intimacy that happens when parent and child read together, and both benefit from these interactions. Not only do the children hear wonderful stories, they discuss them and in the process their emerging reading skills are supported.
