Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
100% of our students are recently-arrived immigrants to America. My students speak more than 40 native languages and yearn to be part of the "American experience". However, they face many obstacles and unfamiliar stressors in adjusting to their new lives here. Most are the primary translators for their families, many are child-care providers to younger siblings, and many must work almost full-time to support their families' economic needs. They are also dedicated to their education and see collaboration, team building, and communication as pillars for their success in the U.S. Many are the only English-speaker in their household and must juggle school with a myriad of family responsibilities throughout the day. They need our extra support now more than ever. COVID has been particularly brutal on my students' access to tailored and conscientious curriculum. Our students are so excited to return to school in-person, as they value time spent together to share ideas, empathy, support and kindness in a safe and creative space.
My Project
At our diversely-populated school, the Gender & Sexuality Alliance (GSA) students have renamed our club "UNITY" to invite even more students in. Our club members are lgbtqia+ students and their enthusiastic allies -- and all newly-arrived immigrants who value unconditional empathy and support. The students understand that the key to a safer, more inclusive school for all of everyone is a club space that invites every person in to learn about one another, interact in a fun, low-stakes way, and share their perspectives with kindness and creativity. These supplies will help us get a strong start for our weekly club activities. We want to use these supplies to create more visibility for the Club so that other students who may be hesitant to join see how students across the school, in every grade level and from every culture we serve, are involved. We especially want to educate younger students (Grades 9-10) that the club is here for everyone - lgbtqia+ students as well as their allies. UNITY's "motto" is that "Diversity is the Key to Success". These items will help achieve this newfound pride and visibility as more and more students join together to share their stories and appeal to members across our school community to be more active allies.
