Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How can underprivileged students do well inside the classroom? Students can do well inside the classroom by having the simple necessary tools to complete their daily work activities.

The majority of our students come from low-income families, and their resources are extremely limited.

Therefore, we must provide these special tools to enhance their learning on a daily basis. More than 80% of our students will come to school without fulfilling their whole school supply list. It is important for teachers to make sure that our students have the tools necessary to reach their dreams. Financial needs should not get in the way of academic excellence.

My Project

Unit rate is a concept that children will use well into their adulthood. This concept is not only found when determining which item is the better buy but it can also be used when determining a person's speed when completing a task, the velocity at which a water balloon is falling from a given point, or even calculating the difference in speed when a person does a task freely as opposed to having a resistance.

Learning is all around us!

Do students even realize how fun unit rate can actually be? They most certainly will when we take our learning outside. It's amazing how a student's perception of a skill changes once they perform a hands-on task. For example, how will be the initial speed of a person racing in a potato sack differ from racing without one? How did the unit rate change? In addition, when teams have the latex band, how does the resistance affect the unit rate when trying to complete the task? When playing Jenga, what is the unit rate when a person is grabbing a tile from the bottom as opposed to grabbing a tile from the top? Finally, when tossing a water balloon from a given distance, how does the unit rate change? How does the velocity of the throw affect the unit rate? This definitely will be an exciting lesson!
