Unique Families, All Special Families!

Help me give my students books that help them process real life circumstances they encounter: from diverse families (e.g., And Tango Makes Three), family incarceration, or children of immigrant families living in a new country.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 17 Kindergarten students are a kind, enthusiastic and an inquisitive group of children. A diverse group of learners, most are English speakers while 8 are bilingual. Their families come from mostly Latin American countries, & their experiences are as varied as they are. Some live with humble yet stable lives with both parents & siblings, while others live with a single working parent; one child lives in a motel while his dad is incarcerated. Despite the struggles of every family, my students thrive. Accessing the curriculum is challenging; trying to learn foundational skills while acquiring a new language, feeling part of the larger community, or dealing with difficult circumstances such as incarceration makes it all the more difficult.

I am proud of the way they've learned to solve problems with kind words e.g., "I don't like when you pushed me...." "I'm sorry I pushed you...." "I accept your apology." Experiences within our classroom set the stage for their futures.

I love my students because they are amazing, funny, fair, sweet, curious, and so promising.

My Project

The various titles selected will help make lessons come alive by providing stories children can relate to. These stories let them know they're valued and represented in our classroom, school & community. They've share bits of their lives, & these books will help them know that we respect & care for each other.

Stories about being an immigrant, having an incarcerated parent or being part of the LGBTQ community will help students in my classroom, as well as the rest of my grade level, feel supported in and out of our classroom environments, asserting their lives as unique and special.
