Uniforms and Counseling With Technology for Classroom Success!
My students need an HP laptop computer, a document viewer, Advantage Elementary software, and a color printer with ink for classroom presentations and learning in-class activities. Some students also need school uniforms.
Being the school counselor, one of my main responsibilities is to address the needs of the "whole child" and treat every student holistically. My students come with varying needs, and over 90% belong to impoverished homes. Their diverse cultures, needs, and experiences mean that one size does not fit all when it comes to guidance and counseling.
Due to their parents' economic status after Hurricane Maria and Irma, and the fact that these children attend a Title I school where resources are limited, basic needs such as access to school uniforms and school supplies are always ongoing issues.
We are slowly receiving students impacted by Hurricane Maria, who need my assistance more than ever.
At my school, I wear many hats and I facilitate a vast diversity of students' and teachers' needs alike. Currently, the capacity of my school budget has been limited and challenged due to the impact of Hurricane Irma. As the school counselor, I take a very active role in my students' lives. I visit classrooms daily and give presentations that build character and educate the students about hygiene, core values, and social behavior.
My Project
As the school-wide counselor, one of my main responsibilities is to introduce academic success, studying skills, and holistic social behavior strategies using technology through presentations. Also, I am expected to present the most current research-based classroom behavior strategies that my fellow teachers can implement in the classroom in order to build our students' self-esteem and other skills needed for their academic success.
Currently, the capacity of my students has been limited and challenged due to the impact of Hurricane Irma and recent intake of students from Puerto Rico who were impacted by Hurricane Maria.
More than half of my students have no access to basic commodities in their households, including school supplies and uniforms.
Almost every day, I have to try to accommodate a child who came to school out of uniform because they just migrated from an impoverished or devastated island or their parents cannot afford to purchase what is needed for school.
Unfortunately, due to limited funding, I am running out of ways to provide uniforms and am seeking your donations so that I can have thirty-six shorts, uniform overalls, skirts and polo shirts to assist students in need of uniforms.
As a traveling school counselor, having a laptop computer as an instructional aide will allow me to always have my presentations, lessons, and activities portable and easily accessible. The Advantage DVDs are interactive and address all core subjects as well as lessons that address health, bullying, and other social topics.
We need a document camera/viewer, so that hard copies of presentations, lessons, or homework can be projected for the entire class or in the cafeteria for grade levels or the entire school body. The color printer is especially needed to print out flyers, posters, and handouts for students.
