My Students

"You're Mama" or "You're ugly self" are common quotes heard in the halls of our school. With the daily challenges and stress of living in this poor community, students are constantly in survival mode and rarely support one another. Building empathy is a daily focus for every teacher at our school

Our students come from very low socioeconomic backgrounds with single parent households.

They face the daily challenge of avoiding gangs, getting basic needs met and trying to stay focused in school despite their personal struggles. These limitations have put these students in a type of survival mode in order to cope with their outside world. They have great difficulty interacting positively with one another and often take out frustrations and anger on their peers. Instead of being empathetic and compassionate towards each other, they tend to be defensive, rude, and disrespectful to each other. Our students attend a neighborhood elementary with very limited resources and little opportunities for extra activities. There are approximately 400 students, grades pre-k through 8th.

My Project

Experiencing the documentary, "Bully", first hand in the theater will help our students to truly begin to understand the effects bullying has on students. Through first hand accounts presented throughout this documentary, our students will begin to become mindful of bullying and how it impacts the lives of people. We believe that awareness is the key in this situation and by having this wonderful opportunity to see this film our students will begin to take the first steps towards tolerance and change. We plan on building an entire unit based on bully prevention and awareness after we see this film. We will be following a program called "Second Step" which has very hands-on, sequential lessons that promote anti bullying behavior. We also intend to have the students work in groups to create PSA's (Public Service Announcements) and mini documentaries or plays demonstrating what they they have learned. These will be presented at a school wide openhouse in June and to other classrooms.

Providing our students with this opportunity to see the "Bully" documentary is an enormous first step towards our students developing tolerance, respect, compassion, and unity among their peers.

By building their awareness of the effects of bullying, we can begin to eliminate negative, judgmental attitudes and create stronger student bonds which will follow them throughout their lives. Our students will begin a journey to become extremely unified rather than "bullified" from this point on.
