Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have eighteen bilingual kindergarten students who love singing, dancing, and learning about their world. For the majority of them, kindergarten is their first school experience. Most of my students qualify for free lunch while the remainder qualify for reduced-price lunch. While all my students speak Spanish as their native language, they come to me with unique backgrounds and experiences.

My students are inquisitive and eager to absorb new knowledge.

They learn from each other as much as I learn from them in the short nine months we have together.

My Project

This project will address two areas of great concern: child poverty and child obesity. Through our discussions in social studies, students become aware of world problems such as poverty but think they do not have the power to change anything.

UNICEF's Power Bands give kids the power to be active citizens by providing food to malnourished children in countries around the world.

UNICEF's Power Bands help address obesity by tracking the number of steps my students take each day and awards points for those steps taken. Once students reach a certain number of points, UNICEF will provide food packets to malnourished children. Your donation will allow my students to take social action; through the points they earn for being physically active, students will be able to provide food to hungry children.
