My students need the unifix cubes to help create a system of number sense with the activities that we are doing. Also, my younger students need a rug to settle in on when they enter.

My Students
What is a number? Students, especially younger ones, truly need to know what numbers mean in order to grow with them.
My students come from rural South Carolina and many do not have pre-school experience when they arrive to us.
Because of this gap in preparation, many students have no number sense when they come to us in kindergarten and may or may not have it when they move to first grade. Without this concrete base, the students will continue to struggle with math concepts throughout their education.
My Project
My students will be able to use the unifix cubes to continue exploring math and number concepts. I have had to move classrooms, yet again, and am in a classroom that doesn't have a warm, inviting area for the younger children to work on. The rugs will help them be able to explore comfortably with each other while completing tasks.
One example of how we will use our cubes is by completing basic addition samples through the "part/part/whole" concept of math.
This is a HUGE part of kindergarten and first grade. Without this being concrete, the students will struggle the rest of their years in math classes.
