Unearthing Our Joy in Diversity Theater

Help me give my students in Diversity Theater the opportunity to design, produce, and perform a theatrical project to empower them and provide an avenue for expression regardless of background and experience in theater.

My Project

The overarching goal is make theater more accessible to all students and remove as many barriers as possible for all students from all backgrounds to participate in theater in a meaningful way.

Theater is a costly art and many students do not have access to after-school programs due to a variety of factors outside students' control.

Additionally, in collaboration with our committee of student leaders, we are finding it difficult for students of color to get involved and have representation in this art. Therefore, this year, Diversity Theater aims to produce its first full production within the class to guarantee students access to art and expression. This is in addition to our mainstage show, so students have the opportunity to participate in either capacity.

Offering this learning opportunity as part of the class allows students to be involved in other activities outside of class if they wish, hold down jobs, manage their school work and time better, and flourish as well-rounded individuals. The focus of the class is also to provide more students of color avenues to explore their identities, cultures, and communities through theater.
