Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
During their 7th-grade journey, my students will engage in an inspiring and thought-provoking environment—expanding their knowledge and nurturing their creativity and critical thinking skills. Although this is an English Language Arts class, they will also explore their artistic and creative side because I believe English and Art go hand-in-hand. I plan to incorporate all these items into my classroom in exciting non-traditional ways that will hopefully engage students and plant the seed about the importance of education.
Not to mention, my students attend an "Equity focus school," which means 50% of the students are Black, Hispanic/Latinx, or American/Native American coming from low-income homes.
But as of July 23, 2023, Greatschools.org states that my school is 86% Hispanic/Latinx and 13% Black, with 91% of these students coming from impoverished homes; and as we emerge into 21st-century technology and learning, their classrooms don't even have something as simple as dry-eraser whiteboards—which is the reason for chalk within my classroom project list. Learning and its means are evolving, but these students are forced to remain technologically left behind—learning with the bare minimum. My supplies are supposed to nurture at least 125 students, which is not much for the number of students. But I will do everything in my power to make it work. These children aren't being invested in, so it is no surprise that they come into the classroom below their academic grade levels in all the core classes. I hope to change this trajectory. So being able to give these students an item, such as a soundbar to hear the audio during our classroom videos and movies better, would be something they not only are not used to having but an experience they equally deserve.
