My Project
As an English Language Arts teacher, I feel it is important for my students to read stories that are not only entertaining, but that can teach them important messages. In working with students at a variety of reading levels, it is important to select texts that can be accessible to all students. One way to do this is through the use of Graphic Novels which are an innovative way to approach serious topics.
Learning about the Holocaust is part of the 8th grade ELA curriculum at our school.
Last year when I taught 8th Grade Honors English I decided to teach the graphic novel "Maus" for the first time. Many of my students said that it was one of the best things we read that year. In a Socratic Seminar discussion, almost every student agreed that the graphic novel was the most effective source in teaching them about the Holocaust. When I asked if I should teach it again next year I got a resounding "yes"!
This year I am teaching both Honors and General Education 8th grade English so I will be using this source with a much wider range of students. Therefore I need 20 additional copies of the graphic novel "Maus" by Art Spiegelman to ensure that I have enough copies for all students to use as well as some to be taken home for students who need extended time.
I often incorporate topics relating to history and social studies in my English Language Arts Classroom. By teaching about the Holocaust I hope my students will learn about the dangers of discrimination and the importance of speaking up for what is right, topics that are particularly timely.
