My students are like most young adults, full of energy and knowledge bursting out of them. We recently read the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and had the opportunity to watch the play. It was a delight to see them make connections with both medium such as wondering why the play started from the back of the book (which some liked) and the appearance of Dill’s mother. For scholars who struggled with reading the book, the play made all the connections that they could not make as reader.
My Project
My school is an all girls school in a minority setting. As these young ladies are navigating what it means to be a teenager, they’re also trying to figure out the type of adults they will be one day. Through the characters and story line in Their Eyes are Watch God, students can explore womanhood in a text that is relevant when it was written and today.
Janie faces many struggles from her marriages, the people within her community and her own internal struggles.
As my students study Janie’s experience, they can begin to frame their own sense of worth as they step into college and independence—or simple put, a world where the prescription for being a in the 21st century female is still being develop.
