My Students

The news from Afghanistan has left me questioning how I can help my students process what's happening and how it relates to our lives.

My students are ethnically diverse individuals who come from economically marginalized communities.

They care about their communities and the state of the world, often asking questions and sharing experiences. To help my students (and myself) begin to understand Afghanistan's culture and tumultuous history, I would like to read the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns in our English class.

My Project

For this project, I am requesting copies of Khaled Hosseini's novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, to be read in English class. Reading a book like A Thousand Splendid Suns allows students to learn about an important geo-political country while grappling with the human cost of political decisions. Through class discussions, Socratic Seminars, and cross-teaching with our Global teacher, students will be able to put their lives within a larger global context.

The status and lives of women in Afghanistan are shrouded behind Western perceptions of their culture.

Reading this novel, especially given the current political climate, will enable my students to have a deeper understanding of Afghanistan while further engaging their sensibilities about the importance of education and higher learning in their own lives. Your donation will help build bridges of understanding and give agency and voice to both the women of Afghanistan and my students.
