This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are the greatest group of five and six-year-olds. With high energy levels and enthusiasm, my class always comes to school so eager to learn. My class is very diverse with some families being more fortunate than others.
The twenty-eight students in my class come from varying walks of life, but together we have created one community.
Kindergarten is often my students' first year of school. It is so crucial to build their excitement toward learning and encourage them to achieve great things in the classroom.
My Project
As each year passes, I am finding more and more students who are struggling internally with how they feel and processing sensory needs. So many students have feelings of anger, anxiety, etc. and struggle to explain what's going on internally to those who can help. The books being requested will help students to better understand their internal feelings and coping skills to deal with their emotions in a healthy way. Additionally, I have found that students who experience anxiety, anger, frustration and other feelings often need sensory outlets to work through these emotions. The items such as sand timers, water timers, and kinetic sand will help sooth students' feelings and work to calm them down to a point they can express themselves clearly. Sand timers are great visual representations of time for students feeling anxious or struggling with transitions. Water timers are great for students to focus on one space and work to calm down. Kinetic sand is also great for students to settle their feelings and calm down in a tactile manner.
