My Students
Photography will empower students to tell stories through portraits and interviews. Using photojournalism techniques with a foundation in fine arts composition, students will integrate art, writing and technology for a new level of engagement in learning and community building.
The elementary students in this project come from new immigrant families of many religious and cultural beliefs.
The Title one school has more than 80% qualifying for free lunch. The photo project will bring the students a better understanding of the formal elements of composing a photograph as well as build a sense of community through stories of immigration in portraits of people in the neighborhood. The students work towards being included in an annual art show where photography will be included.
My Project
4 cameras will get us started on our journey. The cameras are exciting to the students who have little access to technology outside of the school. Although our art department is strong there is not a lot of physical room for different types of art besides painting and drawing. In addition, the ability to use technology and art together to make personally significant images will be a whole new experience that will make them see themselves, their families and the community with connection and respect for the similarities and differences.
We live in a big city and students don't have much opportunity outside of school to interact with different types of people.
The project will begin with the family stories of people who have immigrated and move into the community to show the beauty and strength of the people in the neighborhood. The students will feel the power of great art, reaching out and bringing people together.
