Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a first-grade bilingual teacher in the Chicago Public Schools. I have a highly motivated group of 28 English Language Learners who love school and do their best to learn. Some of my students are recent immigrants from Central and South America. Through this project, I would like to establish a culture of empathy and understanding for our recent immigrant students in the classroom.

My students need art activities to help them deal with their emotions and learn about compassion.

Art activities will not only help my group of first graders to understand their own emotions but also to have empathy for the feelings of their peers.

My students will start their morning routine with a program called "Second Step Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program". This is a program that includes many lessons that create a culture of kindness and compassion in the classroom in four units. The units will include skills in the areas of skills for learning, empathy, emotion management, and problem-solving.

First, my students will follow the SEL lesson plan for the day. Then, they will work in groups of four members to discuss and respond to the lesson of the day. Each group will use construction paper, crayons, and markers to create art reports and present them to their peers. Some other materials like play-dough and sensory sand will be in the calm corner area where students will work in teams to identify and deal with their emotions and problem-solving skills.

Part of the SEL assessment is for students to keep a reflective journal. This journal as well as teacher observations will help me keep track of how much my students have learned about the skills,
