Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are amazing young people in a Title One school. They are mostly Latino and motivated to learn more about the history of their culture in America. What better way to learn that than to study the play by Luis Valdez "Zoot Suite" about the Zoot Suit Riots in Los Angeles during WW II. Using this play as a cornerstone of studying media bias and the power of understanding how the media manipulates the public is so important for young scholars to understand in our changing world.
In addition, this play taps into the prior knowledge of my students and builds a community to learn and share about an important movement in the Latino experience in America that many are not aware of.
My school does not have enough copies to have a class set, so I am hoping to add these 10 copies so each student will have one to read.
