My Students

My students, in general, come from low-income, nontraditional homes in Onaway, MI where education is not always valued. However, our students come to school every day. Our average daily attendance is over 95%, and our students yearn for the structure and stable family atmosphere that our school offers them.

My students are proud of what they know and proud of where they come from, and they break the rules when it comes to traditionally impoverished students.

My students succeed at a higher level than the research says they should, and they are constantly looking for a challenge. This means that, as a teacher, I have to look for ways to challenge them and keep their interest in a quickly changing world.

My Project

I always look for ways to integrate literature into my social studies courses, and the plight of refugees is both historical and timely for my students. Understanding why someone would leave everything they know to strike out for a new beginning is such an important lesson.

I want my students to have a realistic, personal idea of what it would be like to have to escape one's home with only those items carried on one's back.

I don't think my students have a strong grasp of what that would be like, or how important it is to understand that the experiences of others definitely affect their behaviors.
