Understanding Language and Literacy

Help me give my students a deeper understanding of language and literacy. By using Story Telling Kits we will be able to hear, see, and feel the story with the manipulatives in the kits!

My Project

Many of my students have Autism Spectrum Disorder and love to read! The Story Telling Kits will help introduce new vocabulary and give a deeper undersanding and meaning to the stories by using the manipulatives that are supplied in the kits. These manipulatives are small, soft figurines of the main object on each page. This will help my students to not only hear the words, and see the pictures, but feel words and pictures. Studies show that by using more senses (e.g. hear, sound, touch) students can grasp understand at a faster rate and deeper level. The manipulatives will also help to introduce and retain new vocabulary words as the students can actually hold and touch the objects from the story.

The Create-A-Scene pictures will help to strengthen my students' vocabulary and help them to categorize objects.

Each scene has different appropriate objects that can be used. The students will learn to choose appropriate object for each scene. Categorization is a skill that not all children learn on their own. The picture scenes will also be useful for learning and mastering responding to "WH" questions (e.g. who, what, where, when, why). The students will be asked a WH question and will have a visual scene or picture to refer to.

These materials will be useful to give my students a deeper understanding of literacy and vocabulary, which is essential for them to master as they young scholars.
